Frieze on the Old Pension Building

    The American Civil War Series

Instructor: Dr. Joe Fitzharris

Series Concept:

In 2010, I proposed that the Selim Center offer a program on the American Civil War that, in view of the Sesquicentennial (150th anniversary) celebrations, should extend over the five years of the sesquicentennial. This idea was approved after discussion. The events of each year form part of the program and additional topics were included. For example, in 2013, we examined Women, Religion, and Freedmen-Black Troops, and the three critical campaigns of 1863: Gettysburg, Vicksburg, and Tullahoma-Chattanooga. The handouts from each class (outline, suggested readings, some maps) are available below by year. I want to thank Dr. Jan Viktora and Ms. Susan Anderson-Benson for their warm welcome and strong support. To my senior students, the "veterans" of our campaigning (especially those who served all five years) my thanks, my best wishes, and my prayers.
