St. Thomas was the only school in NCAA Men’s basketball (more than 800 teams in Division 1, 2, and 3) to be in the top 12 in the country in three-point field-goal percentage in 2004, 2005, 2006, and 2007. In games Tauer has played or coached, UST teams have compiled a 194-46 (80%) MIAC record. In eleven years of playing or coaching the offense or defense, this includes eight conference titles, seven MIAC playoff championships, and seven NCAA appearances.

As a player, Tauer was an Honorable Mention All-American and GTE Academic All-American. Helped lead St. Thomas to Final Four in 1993–94 and a school record 27 straight victories in 1994-95. Set all-time record at UST for 3-point field goals. Member of Cretin-Derham Hall State Championship teams in basketball and baseball, and named All-State, All-Metro, and Academic All-State in both sports.

This is Tauer's fourteenth year of directing his own camp, during which he has worked with several thousand youth players, many who have gone on to success at the high school and college level. In 2006-07, four members of St. Thomas' varsity team were former campers (2X All-American center Isaac Rosefelt, All West Region Mike Keating, Alex McCoy, and Josh Peltier). Tauer also served as a director of Minnesota Timberwolves’ camps for four summers, coached summer baseball and basketball at Cretin-Derham Hall, and coached baseball at Highland Catholic Grade School. Received his PhD in social psychology from the University of Wisconsin-Madison. Tauer conducts research on motivation, competition, cooperation, and goal-setting that has been published in top academic journals such as the Journal of Educational Psychology, the Journal of Experimental Social Psychology, and the Journal of Personality and Social Psychology.
