Assistant coach and offensive coordinator for the University of St. Thomas men’s basketball team. Professor in the Department of Psychology at St. Thomas. Member of the University of St. Thomas Athletic Hall of Fame.

Tauer has coached at St. Thomas for nine seasons. 2001 inductee of the University of St. Thomas Athletic Hall of Fame. St. Thomas has won four consecutive, 6 of the last 8, and 13 of the last 21 MIAC Championships. In 2008-09, UST was ranked #1 in the country in NCAA D-III. In 2005-06, UST’s offense was the only team in the nation to be in the top 10 the country in highest field-goal %, highest three-point FG%, and fewest turnovers. In 2006-07, UST was one of three Division III teams ranked in the top 12 in the nation in both field-goal% and 3-point field goal percentage. St. Thomas was one of three schools in all divisions of NCAA basketball (Wooster and Northern Arizona are the others) to be in the top 12 in the nation in both field-goal percentage and three-point field goal percentage from 2005-2007. St. Thomas was the only school in NCAA Men’s basketball (more than 800 teams in Division 1, 2, and 3) to be in the top 12 in the country in three-point field-goal percentage from 2004-07. St. Thomas is the only school in the country (all divisions) to have been in the top 10 in FG% each of the past four seasons. In games Tauer has played or coached, UST teams have compiled a 214-46 (82%) MIAC record. In twelve years of playing or coaching the offense or defense, UST has won nine conference titles, seven MIAC playoff championships, and made seven NCAA appearances.
 

As a player, Tauer was an Honorable Mention All-American and GTE Academic All-American. Helped lead St. Thomas to Final Four in 1993–94 and a school record 27 straight victories in 1994-95. Set all-time record at UST for 3-point field goals. Member of Cretin-Derham Hall State Championship teams in basketball and baseball, and named All-State, All-Metro, and Academic All-State in both sports.

This is Tauer's fifteenth year of directing his own camp, during which he has worked with several thousand youth players, many who have gone on to success at the high school and college level. In 2006-07, four members of St. Thomas' varsity team were former campers (2X All-American center Isaac Rosefelt, All West Region Mike Keating, Alex McCoy, and Josh Peltier). Tauer also served as a director of Minnesota Timberwolves’ camps for four summers, coached summer baseball and basketball at Cretin-Derham Hall, and coached baseball at Highland Catholic Grade School. Tauer earned a PhD in social psychology from the University of Wisconsin-Madison, one of the top graduate programs in the country. Tauer conducts research on motivation, competition, cooperation, and goal-setting that has been published in top academic journals such as the Journal of Educational Psychology, the Journal of Experimental Social Psychology, and the Journal of Personality and Social Psychology. He is currently working on a book that focuses on youth sports, parents, and motivation.
