Dr. Buri is a Professor of Psychology at the University of St. Thomas. He received his B.A. in Psychology from Loras College in Iowa. He went on to earn his M.A. and Ph.D. (1976) in Cognitive Psychology at Loyola University in Chicago.
Dr. Buri has spent the entirety of his professional career at the University of St. Thomas, where he has taught a variety of courses, including: Psychology of Marriage and the Family, Learning and Memory, General Psychology, Modern and Thomistic Psychology, and Research Methods. He has also served as the Chair of the Psychology Department as well as a Clinical Faculty Associate in the UST Graduate School of Professional Psychology.
Dr. Buri is the author of How To Love Your Wife, a marriage book for men. He is actively involved in Marriage Preparation and Marriage Enrichment programs in the Twin Cities, and he is a frequent speaker (regionally and nationally) on topics of marriage and parenting. He is also a frequent speaker on university campuses, talking about healthy dating practices and what it takes to do love well. He has another book coming out soon titled Intentional Dating: When You’re Ready To Leave Behind the Liars, Losers, and Lemons and Find Love for a Lifetime. He is also the director of a research program into those factors that contribute to successful romantic relationships and thriving marriages. He has authored more than 50 publications and papers.
Dr. Buri has received numerous teaching awards, including: Minnesota Psychological Association Professor of the Year, CASE Special Recognition National Professor of the Year, UST Distinguished Educator Award (UST), UST Professor of the Year, and UST Teacher of the Year. He is affectionately called “The Love Doctor” by his students and he has been dubbed “The Marriage Doctor” by local media in the Twin Cities.
Buri married his high school sweetheart, and he says of her: “Kathy is the
love of my life. She is the best thing that ever happened to me.”
Together they have six children, and they reside in Saint
